A rural secondary school shaped through firsthand listening.
In Ghana’s Akatsi District, Disaster Volunteers of Ghana sought a secondary school that could serve both day and boarding students while strengthening its wider grassroots work. Designer Anna Nagasugi visited the site, studied local construction, met the DIVOG team, and used that direct experience to shape the proposal rather than relying only on distant assumptions. The campus brings classrooms, residential needs, and shared school life into a climate-responsive plan informed by site, culture, and available building practices. Boarding and day programs are treated as parts of one learning community, with outdoor circulation and gathering space helping connect the pieces.
Journeyman International supported the partnership and the translation of Anna’s thesis into a design resource the local organization could use for planning and fundraising. The archive documents a completed design, not a verified completed campus. Its enduring value is in the process: a student thesis became accountable to a real partner, a real site, and the long-term work of a Ghanaian organization expanding access to secondary education.
