ICM Primary School Campus

Near the Bay of Bengal in rural Andhra Pradesh, India Christian Ministries proposed a residential primary school for more than 300 students. Karin Bjorkman’s thesis, titled Ashrayanu—refuge—organizes classrooms, living spaces, and shared campus life within a tropical, cyclone-prone landscape. Color, light, shadow, and outdoor circulation make the school feel lively and child-scaled, while climate analysis, regional building traditions, and full-scale material studies inform more serious questions of shade, airflow, structure, and storm resilience. The campus anticipates development around the two-acre site without giving up protected outdoor areas essential to learning and play.

Journeyman International connected ICM’s program to a detailed final design, cost estimate, schedule, and technical drawings. The archive documents a proposal, not confirmed completion. Its central idea is that refuge need not feel closed: careful structure and planning can protect children from a demanding climate while still creating an open, colorful environment for education, friendship, and daily life.
