A school designed to move so learning can continue.
The Schools for Palestine competition asked designers to confront an extraordinary constraint: in parts of the West Bank, a permanent school may face demolition, yet children’s need for a stable place to learn does not disappear. The brief called for a lightweight, modular school that could be assembled with understandable methods, relocated when threatened, and reassembled with minimal interruption. Journeyman International’s participation explored architecture as emergency educational infrastructure: flexible enough to respond to uncertainty, but dignified enough to feel like a real school rather than a temporary enclosure.
Locally available materials, manageable components, shade, ventilation, and rapid construction were essential design questions. The proposals explore ways to preserve learning and a sense of continuity when a permanent school cannot be relied upon.
