About the workshop

The Global Design-Build Workshop brings students, universities, industry professionals, and community partners together to explore how architecture can respond to real needs.

Each edition takes on a material system, community challenge, or developing construction practice. Participants exchange knowledge, work through a design brief, and consider what it takes to carry a proposal into the world: local skills, climate, cost, maintenance, and the people who will use it.

Planned for late July through August 2027, the workshop will follow a format similar to the 2026 program: a global knowledge series, a hybrid design studio, collaborative refinement, and optional design-build implementation. The theme and exact schedule will be announced.

How it works

How the workshop works

Design develops through conversation, testing, and revision. The workshop connects global perspectives with the knowledge of the people closest to a project.

  1. 01

    Lectures & discussions

    Global knowledge series

Lectures and conversations with designers, engineers, and builders introduce the year’s material, community context, and construction questions. Case studies connect design ideas with lessons from real projects.

  2. 02

    International teams

    Hybrid design workshop

International teams respond to a community-based brief. Participants study the site, explore materials, and develop proposals with guidance from academic facilitators and professional mentors.

  3. 03

    Mentor feedback

    Collaborative design refinement

Teams present their thinking, receive feedback, and develop clearer, more buildable proposals. Drawings, models, and shared presentations help everyone understand how a design would work.

  4. 04

Optional · Subject to project readiness

    Design-build implementation

Where funding, a suitable site, and local supervision are in place, a selected design can move toward prototyping or construction. Local builders lead construction, with students contributing in supervised learning and support roles.

Questions about participating

Who can express interest?

Students and practitioners in architecture, engineering, construction, and related fields, along with educators interested in participating or connecting their university. Preregistration helps us understand who would like to join; eligibility and participation options will be shared with the 2027 program.

Can I take part remotely?

The established workshop format combines online knowledge sharing and international design collaboration, with local activities where available. The balance of remote and in-person participation for 2027 will be announced with the schedule.

When and where will it happen?

The workshop is planned for late July through August 2027. Exact dates, the theme, project location, and participating institutions will be announced. Preregister to receive those details and the next registration steps.

What will it cost?

Fees, any travel or accommodation requirements, and what is included will be shared when the program is confirmed. There is no payment at preregistration.

Does preregistration reserve a place?

It records your interest and gives the Journeyman team a way to contact you. It does not confirm admission, reserve a place, or commit you to attending.

Will there be a certificate or professional development credit?

Previous workshop materials included certificates and CPD recognition where applicable. Any certificate or professional development arrangements for 2027 will be confirmed separately.
