A temporary marketplace made to feel distinctly Rwandan.
For the Commonwealth summit planned in Kigali, the Journeyman International Rwanda team proposed a Made in Rwanda marketplace within the city’s car-free zone. Reusable shipping containers become pop-up shops, cafés, restaurants, and lounges, arranged at pedestrian intersections and plazas informed by imigongo patterns. Bamboo, timber, planting, color, and locally made art soften the industrial modules and give Rwandan makers a visible setting for fashion, food, craft, and design. Because the components can be reconfigured, the marketplace is conceived as useful event infrastructure rather than a one-time stage set.
Separate art installations along major routes extend the experience beyond a single enclosure and create more opportunities for local artists to shape how visitors encounter Kigali. The work is a conceptual proposal associated with CHOGM, not a claim that the marketplace was constructed as drawn. Its design lesson is in the balance: use a fast, modular system while letting local material, pattern, and creative work define the identity of the place.
