A training ground for technologies meant to travel.
The Connect America Resource Center is envisioned as a hands-on training base in Alabama for people preparing to support community-led infrastructure work elsewhere. Instead of teaching only through presentations, the campus would let participants build, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain the systems they may later encounter in the field. Water and sanitation, biosand filtration, borehole repair, rainwater harvesting, permaculture, agroforestry, and related appropriate technologies form the practical curriculum. The model draws from Connect Africa centers in East Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo while asking what a U. S.
base can contribute without replacing local expertise: prepared partners, tested tools, and a stronger understanding of maintenance and context. Journeyman International’s role is to organize the land and learning spaces so demonstration systems, workshops, storage, and group instruction work as one training environment. The project remains a proposal. Its value lies in rehearsal—giving people room to learn through failure and repetition before they support real projects whose long-term success depends on technical humility and durable local ownership.
