A village house for books, childhood, and shared culture.
Dar Douar—“village house”—was designed with Teach4Morocco as a small early-childhood center and library that could adapt to several communities in the Aït Bouguemez Valley. Rather than import a standardized school, Ismaïl El Kasmi’s proposal works with the High Atlas landscape and its established materials: stone, earth, timber, and local craft. The long library recalls the movement and social life of the valley’s roads, while a simple, symmetrical plan can be mirrored or adjusted for different sites. Rooms support preschool learning, reading, and cultural activities, but the building is intended to welcome multiple generations rather than separate children from village life.
The construction approach also seeks to restore visibility and dignity to local building knowledge. Journeyman International’s role was to help turn that repeatable idea into a detailed architectural set with roof, wall, and material principles. Dar Douar remains a pilot proposal—a flexible piece of cultural and educational infrastructure rooted in the form and making of its place.
