The story

Oral healthcare brought closer to Independence.

Before the Belize Dental Clinic opened, residents around Independence often traveled more than an hour to reach oral healthcare. Dr. John Look, Global Opportunities for Medical Missions, university partners, and Journeyman International developed a clinic that could bring routine treatment into the community and support visiting dental teams. Steve Shimmin’s design uses a shaded, tropical building language with a generous veranda, making arrival and waiting more comfortable while protecting interior treatment spaces from heat and heavy sun.

The clinic was built and is operating—an important distinction within a portfolio where many projects remain proposals. A planned second phase would add housing for visiting clinicians, extending the facility’s ability to host service teams when funding allows. The project’s story is intentionally straightforward: identify a geographic barrier to care, create a practical clinical setting, and organize it so local patients and visiting professionals can use it well. Its impact begins with distance reduced and essential treatment available closer to home.
