Empowering Villages, Karambo River Master Plan

At Karambo River, East African Power’s energy project created an opportunity to think beyond generation equipment. Empowering Villages and Journeyman International proposed an economic-development campus near the hydropower site where reliable electricity could support training, small enterprise, processing, and shared community functions. The master plan’s role is to connect those uses to circulation, land, infrastructure, and future phases so individual buildings do not arrive as isolated investments.

Flexible work and learning spaces allow programs to change as local businesses and partnerships develop. Its design premise is nonetheless important: electricity becomes more useful when people also have places and tools to turn it into services, products, and income. Planning energy and community facilities together is intended to keep more decisions and income within Karambo.
