A family’s healthcare vision translated into a rural clinic.
The Margaret Emily Spence Wellness Centre grew from Sharon’s family’s long effort to bring affordable, quality healthcare closer to Torrington, Jamaica. Kyle Rogers’s thesis turns that vision into a medical center designed around the realities of rural access: clear arrival, dignified waiting, private consultation and treatment, staff support, sanitation, and a building that can remain comfortable in a hot climate. Shaded outdoor edges and passive airflow reduce dependence on mechanical systems where appropriate, while clinical rooms retain the organization required for safe care.
Journeyman International helped connect the family-led initiative to design and construction planning, giving fundraising and local coordination a concrete proposal. The 2015–16 archive does not verify completion, so the center remains a design project rather than a claim of current services. Its power lies in origin and scale—a community’s persistent healthcare ambition given a durable, legible physical form that could reduce the distance rural families travel for essential care.
