Nyamata Hospital Extension

As Kigali’s growth extends south toward Nyamata, one of Rwanda’s longstanding hospitals faces rising demand and aging infrastructure. The extension plan begins with maternity services, placing the most urgent clinical upgrade within a phased framework for the larger hospital. New labor, delivery, recovery, support, and staff areas must connect safely to existing departments without interrupting care. Clear patient and service routes, privacy, infection control, daylight, ventilation, and room for future expansion guide the architectural work.

Journeyman International’s proposal treats modernization as a sequence rather than a single disruptive replacement, allowing the hospital to keep operating while critical areas improve. The archive does not establish completion of the maternity phase or later work, so the project remains an extension proposal. Its architectural responsibility is continuity: help an essential public institution grow with its community while making each phase clinically useful, compatible with existing systems, and ready for what follows.
