A storm-damaged market rebuilt as a platform for local recovery.
Super Typhoon Rai—Odette—damaged most structures across Siargao, including Lokal Tabo, the community center and market run by Lokal Lab in Burgos. The Rebuilding Siargao competition paired reconstruction with wider urban interventions, asking how recovery could strengthen local livelihoods rather than simply reproduce what was lost. The proposed Tabo hosts zero-fee artisan markets, local produce and plastic-free goods, and a restaurant serving traditional food. Flexible, storm-conscious construction, protected open space, repairable materials, and clear service areas allow the building to shift between trade, meals, events, and community coordination.
Journeyman International’s participation supports a locally led organization already working on food, culture, and ecological practice. The archive documents a competition and construction opportunity, but does not verify that Journeyman’s design was built. Its architectural purpose is recovery through exchange: restore a trusted public marketplace where income, food, craft, and community connection can return together.
