The story
A small library designed to feel enveloped by the forest.
Rubagabaga Library was developed with Afritech and Empowering Villages as a place for reading, study, and community learning in rural Rwanda. The design theme—“enveloped by the forest”—uses the surrounding landscape to shape arrival, light, outlook, and the quieter atmosphere of the interior. A clear floor plan, expressed roof structure, and sheltered edges create flexible reading areas without relying on complicated systems. Local materials and straightforward construction support affordability and maintenance, while the building’s relationship to trees gives children and adults places to read both inside and out.
Journeyman International produced a detailed architectural set, though the drawings are explicitly marked not for construction and the archive does not verify completion. The library therefore remains a developed proposal. Its architectural value is intimacy: a modest civic building can encourage curiosity when it offers calm, daylight, connection to nature, and a recognizable place the community can claim for learning beyond school hours.
