The story

A familiar barn gives summer learning more room to grow.

Camp Tepee welcomes more than four hundred children each summer to a forty-seven-acre outdoor center in Monroe, Connecticut. The program offers working families dependable childcare while giving children a screen-free day of nature, friendship, exploration, and play, with financial assistance intended to keep participation open. Capacity is now constrained by the site's limited buildings. The current proposal begins with a new barn-like program space positioned near the arrival area, then considers circulation, parking, and future outdoor amenities as one property plan.

Large glazed doors open the interior to the landscape, while a simple timber character keeps the building legible as camp rather than institution. The November 2025 board review documents a developed concept, not a completed building. Its value is practical: one durable, flexible room can extend the camp season, support different activities, and help the YMCA welcome more families without losing the outdoor identity that makes Camp Tepee meaningful.
