The story
An idle boiler room is repurposed as a civic room for a recovering city.
In central Trostyanets, an underused communal boiler building is proposed for conversion into a Youth Community Center serving both local residents and people displaced by Russia’s war against Ukraine. Reusing the industrial shell preserves material and memory while giving a neglected structure a new public role. A large multipurpose hall, coworking areas, educational rooms, and cultural activity spaces would support study, events, collaboration, and informal gathering under one roof. Renewable-energy upgrades and a repaired envelope are intended to reduce operating demands and model practical renovation within the region’s broader reconstruction effort.
The project record identifies a clear adaptive-reuse concept, but the reviewed Drive archive did not contain a final design book, technical drawing set, or evidence of completed construction. The center remains a proposal. Its architectural value lies in transformation without erasure: a building once devoted to mechanical service can become visible social infrastructure, offering young people a place to shape the city’s next chapter together.
